empanada dough (recipe)

So you want to make empanadas?  Here is an super tasty dough that is extra easy and fantastically flaky.  It is suitable for both baked and fried empanadas.  This recipe makes approximately 18 (4”/10 cm) empanadas.


250 grams flour, plus more for your workspace
3 TBSP cold butter, cut into small pieces
3 TBSP lard, cut into small pieces
1 egg
1 tsp salt
1 TBSP lemon juice
⅓ cup water

Step 1: Mix the salt and flour together


Step 2: Add the butter and lard and coat make sure they are coated with flour


Step 3: Add the egg, lemon juice and water

Step 4: Mix well

The dough should not be overworked, i.e. there should be small chunks of butter and lard and it should be slightly sticky.  Add flour to your workspace as needed.


Voila – empanada dough.  You can now make empanadas.
